If you are looking to utilise a private water source (which includes any old or new well, spring, borehole or even rain water) that is intended for human consumption it is essential that it complies to the Private Water Supply Regulations 2009 (but this is due to be updated). The Regulation defines a number of maximum prescribed concentrations to a range of chemical and bacteriological parameters.
The Local Authority may make regular visits to test the water, time scale is based on the type and use of the property (private household is currently every five years). We can also arrange for a full analysis to be carried out on your private water source, then we can design and install a water treatment system based around the analysis and your requirements. Generally the bare minimum we would recommend is a pre-filter (to remove sediment) and a correctly sized UV steriliser.
